Kimi Antonelli holds a 123-point lead over his teammate George Russell in the Formula One drivers' championship. With five races left on the calendar, Russell must win the next race in Mexico City to remain mathematically in the title fight. If Russell fails to take the win, Antonelli will be crowned the 2026 world champion.

The gap widened after Antonelli won the United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas on Sunday. The 20-year-old Italian started from pole position and finished the 56-lap race in 1:35:16.650. Charles Leclerc of Ferrari crossed the line second, 13.078 seconds behind Antonelli. Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing took third, 17.485 seconds back.

Antonelli's victory was his ninth of the season. He also secured the constructors' title for Mercedes, which now leads Ferrari by 133 points. Mercedes has 607 points, while Ferrari has 474. This marks the second consecutive United States race won by Antonelli this year, following his earlier success in Las Vegas.

The decisive factor in the race was tire strategy. While most competitors made two pit stops, Antonelli waited until Lap 25 for his only stop. He did not return to the pit lane after that. Antonelli credited his team for the call, describing it as an incredible effort to trust the one-stop approach.

A Virtual Safety Car on Lap 52 altered the end of the race. Valtteri Bottas stopped his Cadillac on the track, keeping the safety car out until the penultimate lap. Verstappen noted that this allowed him to secure the podium, though he said his car's pace and tire selection were not optimal. The four-time champion is now out of the title race and will go two years without a world championship if he does not win in Mexico.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff called the performance the best race Antonelli has produced. Wolff stated that Antonelli controlled the race despite starting with the inferior tire. Antonelli agreed with his boss that the execution in Austin was superior to his earlier wins at Monza, Monaco, and Spa, citing the team's ability to build performance across the weekend.

The next race is scheduled for Mexico City. Antonelli remains focused on finishing the season strongly, saying he wants to go into the 2027 season with high hopes. The Las Vegas Grand Prix will be the final race of the year in November.
