The Milwaukee Brewers took Game 3 of the World Series 10-1 from the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday night in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Jackson Chourio led the charge with four hits, two runs, and one RBI in five innings of play. The Brewers now lead the best-of-seven series 3-0. They have won seven straight games across the National League Championship Series and the World Series. The team is one win away from an 8-0 start in the postseason, a mark no Major League Baseball team has ever reached. The only prior club to sweep both final rounds was the 1976 Cincinnati Reds, though that era featured a five-game divisional round.
Chourio opened the game with a single and added three more base hits as the inning progressed. He collected a double in the fifth inning, an offensive surge that saw the Brewers score eight runs on 16 hits. The Rays managed only three hits and one run in the entire contest. That lone run came in the ninth inning, a period when the outcome was effectively decided. Through the first eight innings, Tampa Bay had recorded zero runs on one hit. Chourio’s four hits were all registered at speeds of 99 mph or higher, a metric that indicates hard contact. At 22 years old, he became the youngest player to achieve a four-hit game in the World Series since Joe Garagiola in 1946.
Chourio said he approached each at-bat with the intention of getting on base to set up the players behind him. "Yeah, I think that you could say this is one of my better games," Chourio said after the game. "Really, I was just taking every at-bat like it could be my last and trying to find any way I could to get on base. Because I know, as long as I get on base, there's guys behind me who could score." Brewers manager Pat Murphy praised the outfielder’s discipline and defensive contributions, including a stolen base during the game. Murphy compared Chourio’s work ethic to that of Kobe Bryant, noting that the player is coming into his own after ages 20, 21, and 22.
Chourio’s performance extends a strong postseason run. He is batting .571 with 14 hits in the World Series. He has hit two home runs and stolen three bases during the playoffs. In the regular season, injury limited him to 127 games, but he still recorded 4.9 wins above replacement. He has achieved the 20-home run and 20-steal milestone in each of the last three seasons. The Brewers signed Chourio to a contract that runs through the 2031 season, with two club options extending potential tenure through 2033.
The Rays showed brief promise in Game 2 when they scored four runs in the first inning, but they have not scored since that sequence. They lost that game 5-4. Game 4 of the World Series is scheduled for Tuesday in St. Petersburg. A Milwaukee victory would complete the sweep of the postseason thus far.
